Review on Zojirushi NHS-06 3-Cup Rice Cooker (Uncooked) by Kyle Rodman

Base model Far from base

I bought the base, the smallest rice cooker listed here, after my old Rival rice cooker died. It was a gift and lasted over 7 years so I was pretty happy with it and might have bought one if I could find it. But I didn't. I finally settled on this one, despite being more expensive than other mainstream rice cookers, because I was very happy with Zojirushi's other products, especially the thermos and decanter. Wow! I was surprised! I expected it to be almost the same as my old rival since I have the basic version and the smallest size. But it has much more detail. The bowl you put the rice in is much more durable and strong. And the finish is smooth and decidedly durable (although I've only used it a couple of times) compared to what I had before. The cable is quite long, which is also surprising, but very convenient. It also came with the accessories advertised, although I didn't need them. I measure my own rice/quinoa/etc. with regular measuring cups, and I have an old paddle from a Rival rice cooker. I say that because I saw another reviewer mention that they didn't get any accessories with the base model. So far I've been cooking turmeric quinoa with garam masala (which I eat regularly for breakfast) and wild rice in this new rice cooker. No problem. No liquid seeps out of the tiny hole in the lid. No grains stick to the bottom of the bowl - in fact, it all slides out so quickly and easily you'd expect it to be covered in oil. It also makes cleaning easier - since nothing sticks to the bottom, you can easily remove all the grains into a container or plate, leaving the bowl completely empty. It can also be easily washed in the dishwasher (just like the old Rival). Overall it feels more like a luxury sport model compared to the Rival I had before, although I got the 'base' model. There might not be as many bells and whistles as the higher-end options, but there's no shortage of quality or functionality. Definitely worth the extra money compared to other "basic" rice cookers and way better than I expected.
