I have used ultrasonic cleaners a lot in the past, both professionally and at home. My most recent cleaner was a tiny $30 item I bought here, and while it was a bit cheesy, it cleaned a lot of things. Everything from small engine carburetors to tools and jewelry. well, everything that had to be cleaned and fitted. The problem is that not much has come out. It was a small vacuum and I was tired of not having space to clean large parts. When I bought this thing my requirements were: 1- Must be able to put a jar of spaghetti sauce in the tank (more on that later) 2- Must have a heater (hot solution cleans MUCH better) 3- Must have a manual have controls (no touchpads or membrane switches - I found those more error prone) 4- Should be cheap enough that if it fails in a year I can throw it away with no regrets. So I went with this thing for less than $70 (I think I bought it as part of a lightning deal). It's much more powerful than my previous cleaner, works great for cans, and has a manual dial. I skipped a few parts and a few carburetors and it clears things up pretty quickly. So why jars of spaghetti sauce? One way to use an ultrasonic cleaner is to fill a jar with the cleaning solution. You put the dirty parts in a can and the can goes into the ultrasonic cleaner's tank, which is then filled with clean water. The dirty solution stays in the glass, which is easier to clean than the tank. Also, you can store different jars depending on what solution you plan to use. I like to use empty tomato sauce jars. They contain a lot of detergent and are made of glass, which should transmit ultrasonic waves more efficiently. Be careful when using glass jars. I do it, but that doesn't mean you should do it. Glasses can break and spill cleaning solution everywhere, and you have to clean up the broken glass. Do this at your own risk and don't call me if anything goes wrong. If in doubt, plastic peanut butter jars are much less likely to break and are fine with this machine. In short, the thing works. Insert the stainless steel bracelet (DO NOT insert the entire watch, just the bracelet), turn on the machine and watch the cloud of god knows what seep between the links. You probably thought a watch strap was pretty clean, right? Well, now you know better. Drop an old head or bolt covered in grease for bonus points. A hot, strong solution of water and degreaser (I like Totally Awesome Cleaner from the Dollar Store) will leave the parts unrecognizable clean. yes it is noisy All this cavitation tends to create a lot of noise. The same goes for ultrasonic cleaners, so either keep them away from people or wear hearing protection. Two caveats: First, hot, wet metal parts oxidize quickly, so be prepared to dry and oil them if necessary. necessary.
