For some reason I thought they were bigger than they actually are. The size is just perfect for holding the cable without being so bulky that it gets in the way. I really like that they include silicone grommets so you can use thinner wire and hold it tight. The cable I tested with is an Anker Powerline II, so it's quite thick and has a braided outer surface. I tried without a shim but it was too weak so I used a thin shim which was honestly too tight but with extra pressure it closed and now it won't move through the cable at all. I attached the base to the monitor stand, which is a glass surface, and wiped it down with rubbing alcohol. Adhesion is strong and I cannot remove it with reasonable force. On a note; The instructions recommend placing it as close to the plug as possible to protect it from voltage, but I strongly advise against it as it has the exact opposite effect. Proper strain relief requires a flexible connector shell/extension that spreads the flex over a greater distance, reducing stress on the connector base.
