The sock smokes like crazy

tldr; WARNING! THESE ARE NOT 100% SILICONE SOCKS - BURNING/BURNING. Installing the block and neck was easy. Everything seemed to fit. I used screws from a scrapped old print/heatsink assembly. I increased the temperature to 260 and greyish smoke is clearly visible. "Silicone" sock smokes (burns) like crazy. At first I thought I installed the heating element/thermistor poorly and it might be the insulation of the wiring, but I took off the sock and heated to 260. There is no smoke when the medium is off. I looked up what the "safe" temperatures are for regular silicone socks and read it's 300. I was way below. I thought maybe there is some residual oils/soaps/etc from the manufacturing process. So I put the sock back on, heated it to 260 and let it heat for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes smoke was still coming out of the hot end. I tried all 3 socks. Same results. In summary, the material used should be a mix of silicone and something (maybe rubber?) to keep production costs down. Now I'm interested in the "aluminum" block and the "stainless" cleanliness of the throat.

Pros
  • These Ender 3 hotend socks will help a lot to stabilize the temperature of the hotend regardless of the ambient temperature
Cons
  • disappear
