Review on Hard Find Fastener 014973150020 Piece 50 by Justin Dorsett

Revainrating 2 out of 5

The metal isn't that good - three out of twelve broke during installation

Bought to secure the gate in the fence around the house. The gate installer used 5/16" x 3" wood screws to attach the hinges. It was good for the screws through the hinges in the gate itself as they went through the wood of the gate and all the way into the 2x4 on the back. But for screws through the hinges on the side of the rack, those original screws didn't go into the rack at all, just in 2x4's. Eventually the 2x4s started moving away from the post (they were just pinned down) and my gate started to sag. Anyway, I used a Dewalt 20V impact wrench (not very powerful) to remove the original 3" screws from the side of the rack. , then use the same impact wrench to drive those 2" longer screws. Now the 3" hole is already pre-drilled thanks to the 3" screws removed. So there were only 2" left and I figured I could do them just let yourself run in. But the fourth of those 5" screws broke while I was screwing it into the rack! Another two" into the pressure treated 6x6 pine bar and it broke. The posts are three years old so it's natural no "wet wood". I was surprised when one of them came loose. And it was difficult to unscrew the broken screw to screw in another one. This time I used a long 1/4" drill bit to help pre-drill the Lochs to finish and it was fine. I pre-drilled all the remaining holes. I had a total of 12 spares. The first 3 were hammered in with no pre-drilling and no problems. The 4th burst so I pre-drilled and it was ok. I always pre-drilled holes 5 through 12 and two more of those screws broke! See image. They all broke in the same place, and it took about an inch and a half more before they were pressed against the hinge surface. Remember that the holes were pre-drilled three inches deep to a full 5/16" diameter with the lag screws removed, and the remaining two inches pre-drilled to 1/4". And yet I broke two of them?! Ridiculous. Obviously they are made of inferior metal and I would not buy them again. Oh they look black in the picture because I pre-coated the heads with flat black paint to match the hinge surfaces.
