This Step2 Extra Large Mailbox and Post Kit is a behemoth. With guidance from USPS’s new extra large next generation mailbox dimensions, the actual mailbox size was quite unexpected. Admittedly, I was quite stunned when opening the box to find how large it actually was. Compared to my old mailbox, I had a moment where I was reconsidering my life choices and whether I made a mistake in choosing this as a replacement. Not only was the mailbox itself already large, the back post sleeve made it even taller. Luckily, I pushed on to installing the mailbox, albeit somewhat reluctantly at first.The total installation was fine for me, a home DIY-er. Purchased a new 4x4 lumber post at Lowe’s, cut it down to size, and fitted into the previous mailboxes spot. Then put together the mailbox kit, and everything took around an hour for me (probably less than 30 minutes if only pertaining to installing the mailbox kit excluding the prep stuff). In the grand finale of the installation, everything looked just right; not too big nor out of place.Some things to note about this kit are as follows-1) Since the pieces are plastic and the screws are metal, do have to be careful not over screwing/stripping the plastic with the screws.2) The instructions were a bit difficult to understand where some of the screw placements were supposed to be.3) Though it is understandable, this kit does require an inner 4x4 wooden lumber post which this kit’s plastic exterior post sleeve goes over. Whether that be from an existing mailbox post or a new one from any home improvement store, it is something additional that is needed for the installation (besides some other basic tools usually found around the house).4) The optional space for a plant hanger behind the mailbox is a nice feature, though I would probably want a bit more length to the bottom extension where the hangar pot would rest upon.Overall, this EXTRA large mailbox has definitely grown on me. I like how it just dwarfs my fellow neighbors' mailboxes, standing tall and proud. Mail carriers have been taking advantage of the size and placing some of my small and medium packages in the mailbox. Through storms and nature, it has held up nicely and dry (2 months at time of review). No remorse, rather quite satisfied, especially how sturdy it is.
