Great - but. in my rating

I bought this monitor a few months ago after realizing how poorly my PS3 was performing on my 20 inch tube TV; Many games were simply unplayable due to blurry text and therefore had to be replaced. So I did a little research and finally settled on this monitor as it was about the right size for my needs and had the feature I needed the most, an HDMI input. It was also significantly cheaper than similarly sized monitors and TVs. Set up was fairly easy, although the cables are a little tricky to connect. I connected the power cable to the monitor and then connected the HDMI cable (which I bought separately; VGA and DVI cables are included here, but no HDMI). I booted up the monitor and the PS3, but the monitor seemed to be finding a signal a bit slower than I wanted. I attributed it exclusively to PS3, I was wrong. Every time I booted it up it took a few seconds to check for an HDMI signal and I often miss the bell when the PS3 starts up. it was OK; again I was wrong. In any case, I continued to use the monitor for the next two weeks and was very happy with it, if not entirely. Colors looked pale in Standard mode and too dark in Dynamic mode, and it was almost impossible to find a happy balance with manual adjustments. Also, the startup problem has escalated; Aside from the lag, the monitor also flashed gray and white several times before going back to normal. I thought it was a problem with the PS3 or the HDMI cable, but it wasn't - it even flickered on the monitor's home screen. And again I decided this was normal and not a problem. A few weeks later, the flashing problem spread to the gameplay itself, if only for a few minutes. I shrugged, slightly annoyed. I reached a limit where the blinking started occurring quickly after 30 minutes of gameplay. I sent it back to Revain and asked for a replacement. With a replacement a couple of weeks ago now, none of these issues have occurred. It starts up quicker, the colors were perfect right out of the box, and there's no extra flash. I am completely satisfied with my replacement model; it works fine in 720p or 1080p. The upscaled DVDs (live and animated) and games look great, although I didn't get a chance to test the Blu-ray extensively. Now for the bad. The menu system is a bit finicky, but I've never had to use it on a replacement model. The keys are a little rough and the glossy edge of the screen is a little too glossy for my liking, but it's not too distracting and I didn't notice any "tunneling". The speakers are also pretty weak with almost no bass, but what do you expect from speakers that aren't even visible? The monitor supports headphones, of course, and the Sennheiser HD 202 headphones work great. Which brings me to my final complaint - the cable ports are very difficult to access. For video inputs, I can understand that, but the headphone jack is also on the back of the monitor, alongside an almost identical audio-in jack (note: the audio-in jack is green, although you can't tell when you're using it try to connect them without flipping the monitor over) and they don't have the markings clear enough to tell the difference. Despite these minor complaints, the replacement monitor gets five stars for the price and quality. I took off one star because of small defects and the need for replacement. I highly recommend this monitor but if you see white and gray get a replacement immediately.

Pros
  • ASUS
Cons
  • Screen Tearing: This occurs when the monitor's refresh rate is too slow, causing the image to appear choppy or distorted.
