Review on 📁 Mediasonic 4 Bay 3.5” SATA Hard Drive Enclosure with USB 3.1 Type C Hub - USB 3.1 Gen 2 10Gbps (HFR7-SU31CH) by Stacey Roberts

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Not compatible with Power Disable drives, no onboard 4-drive RAID

I was hoping to use this as 24TB (4 x 8TB) Raid 5 external storage to run Mediasonic HUR3 -SU3S3 2-Bay Disk Array to replace 16 TB (2x8 TB) 0 array. I was excited to harness the speed of USB 3.1 Gen 2 and increase capacity while improving resiliency. Unlike my 4 year old 2-bay Mediasonic HUR3-SU3S3, which accepted my WD white label drives with no problem, my hard drives just wouldn't work in this unit. I installed the same drives as in the old case (along with 2 additional drives) in this unit, but they would not turn on (the hard drive LEDs on the case did not light up, Windows saw 2 empty removable drives). Knowing that these drives have a 3.3V power off feature, I replaced the WD Blue drive to verify this. The blue disk started immediately and was recognized by both the case and Windows. At this point I re-read the item description more carefully and see that these units clearly don't support it (it's on me). I know a simple mod using kapton tape on a 3.3v pin can solve this problem, but it's more work and .2. I assumed that as a 4-bay RAID enclosure this unit would support RAID 5 (it doesn't). Not only does this device NOT natively support hardware RAID 5, it also does not natively support RAID arrays that use all 4 drives in the enclosure (it supports 2 RAID arrays with two drives). Again, everything is clearly stated in the product description, but I just didn't read it (my problem again). In theory I could mount the drives in windows as separate drives and create a software parity array, which I would do, although this defeats the purpose of hardware RAID, but my drives still wouldn't turn on (see above), ie .TL ;DR - read the description before buying (it didn't work for me, sorry). This device may work for you, but I will return it.

  • Computers and accessories
Cons
