Big but works well

AM-510 meets my fairly basic needs very well and has a few features that I like. I use it for home electrical work as well as repairing some very basic electronics, appliance and small motor problems and repairs. I also use it to work on cars and boats. I like the auto ranging and the strength of the test leads. Sometimes I forget to toggle the red probe when switching from voltage measurement to battery check at 1.5V or 9V, but I guess I'm still used to my old fancy VOM. (Of course, you could always measure battery voltage with no load, although that wouldn't be such a good indicator of battery health.) I also like the easy-to-read display. The AM-510 also has many other features, some of which I rarely use. The physical size of the AM-510 is larger than ideal for me and was slightly larger than I expected. This is not a compact meter. Yes, I read the specs before buying, but I was still a bit surprised. It's okay, and it's on me anyway since I had all the attributes. The case is fairly durable, includes a loop for hanging and a kickstand. The probe clips actually hold the probes in place and allow the instrument to lay flat. Can't comment on the durability of the meter - haven't abused it too much yet - or durability - haven't used it very long. The AM-510 isn't a Fluke, but then again, it doesn't cost nearly as much as a comparable Fluke meter, and for now I think it's a very good, feature-rich value for money.

Pros
  • Fully featured with non-contact voltage detection, continuity tone and diode test
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
