Review on πŸ”Œ Custom 4-Pin Trailer Wiring Harness for Subaru Ascent, Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, XV – CURT 56040, Black by Mark Gilbert

Excellent wiring harness. Installation. not much.

This wiring harness matched the factory connection perfectly on my 2018 Subaru Outback. It is well made, the wiring is clearly labeled and has a built in fuse. It even comes with a dust cap for the plug. The only problem is that the factory plug it plugs into is very difficult to reach. It is hidden under the left rear upholstery panel and is held in place with a piece of blue tape. It's completely invisible and barely noticeable when you try to slide your fingers out from under the hard panel. There is nothing in the instructions that came with it to fix this problem and the Subaru owner's manual doesn't even mention the existence of a factory plug. Luckily I've found that you can get easy access by removing the locking ring on the bottom left corner of the truck bed (see photo). By prying back the small cover and removing the 10mm screw you can slide the entire mounting assembly out and reveal a larger hole. From there you can see the connector well enough to grab it and pull towards the hole to cut the blue tape. You can then press the connector down so that it can be reached with your fingers from below. From there all you have to do is connect the wiring harness, hide the wiring behind the fairing and attach the control box. The instructions also recommend disconnecting the negative battery cable before installing the wiring harness. This is totally unnecessary until you install the built in fuse until you complete the installation. I would also recommend getting a 4 pin tester ($6 here at Revain). You should check the plug to make sure the electrics are working properly before buttoning up all the buttons, and also check the wiring harness if the light on what you're towing isn't working.
