I added this to one of the outputs on my USB hub which is also used for my external HD drives and an SSD for my iMac. Two weeks ago my SSD suddenly got damaged. I ended up having to buy a hard drive repair tool and didn't think too much about it. But sometimes my drives went offline and today my 3TB hard drive failed and I had to rebuild it (fortunately nothing is lost). Now I understand that this gadget has one drawback. There are no capacitors or filters in USB power, and you should avoid sharing them with anything critical to your data. You might get lucky, but it's better to run this from a separate power supply. If you want to share USB power with something important, you can try adding a capacitor, which should have been in this product from the start. I added a 220uF 16V electrolytic capacitor on the back between GND and VCC of the microphone jack.
