Update: 6/23/2020 The seat broke. I looked at another review with a photo and funnily enough that's exactly what happened to mine. The hinge pin is a plastic rod mounted in metal hinges. What happened is when my 2 year old daughter moved when I picked her up and I caught her in an odd tilt. It didn't fall or hit the wall, but I heard a pop and the seat wobbled. When I took it apart I found the exact same thing happened as another reviewer. The plastic rod inside broke in 2 places. This is the weak link. This can be considered if you have a heavier budget. Maybe she just tightened it properly or whatever, but it broke. It's impossible to fix it without heroism. I think I'll look for someone else. If you have toddlers and are just in the potty phase, the combination of child and adult seat is very comfortable! I hated unboxing or having unsightly add-ons (especially when you're trying to keep as little clutter as possible). This is one of your choices. So let's get down to business: Pros: - Build quality seems decent overall - Potty seat folds up and fits fairly snugly on top of the lid so it doesn't protrude - Potty seat has a good magnet and won't fall off if you put it down down an adult seat - good material weight balance. Not flimsy like plastic seats (including plastic soft close) but not too heavy like other wooden seats - easy enough to install - nice finish and seat contour. Not like the cheap versions of building blocks from the big hardware stores - Fairly strong hinges, but probably too early Cons: - No instructions?! I'm doing it myself so I understand, but just to warn you. As some other reviewers have mentioned, no instructions. Simple and clear maybe? It has different parts than your regular toilet seat kits so I can see why it would take someone a second to figure out what's wrong. Just in case, I've included the instructions at the bottom of the review. - What worries me the most is that the supplied long screws attach to the base of the chrome hinges with just a few turns? I'm more comfortable with at least one more twist, but we'll see how it holds - the screw is literally a giant set screw. There is no other way to grip it than with a grip glove, grip pads or a wrench (which will damage the threads). Good thing you really only have to hand tighten - don't think the loop is actually metal, more like hard plastic with a chrome finish - also not keen on the lock nut concept. It has a disc with 2 different shapes, make sure the deeper bowl is "down" where the threaded nut fits and conceptually squeeze the 4 prongs together when tightening. You'll see what I mean. - updated: hinges have plastic rods inside. You're usually fine I guess, but heavier people or people who flop a lot or move around in the seat are more likely to break that bar. Installation: Is there white plastic/urethane? Eyelets, so do it the easiest way: (after your old one is removed) #1.before installing the toilet seat, screw the screws into the loop (not much thread, so it will be a few quick turns. I recommend the rosette for grip, although sometimes it can hit the threads and you won't get a grip.You will be screwing the screw in as tight as you can.Avoid wrenches, you will just rip or break the top of the hinge if you screw in too much thread.A hand stop is all you need. A few firm turns or so.* You have been warned* #2. Slide the white plastic/urethane bushings (or spacers) over the screws at the base of the hinge and install #3. Align the seat, screws and hinges with the toilet and through the #4 mounting holes. Place the washer from the bottom of the toilet over the screw*** sure the tapered side faces the mounting hole and the deeper side the "bowl" is below where the nut will make contact with it #5.hand tighten the nut probably don't go crazy with an adjustable one #6 wrench. Make sure the seat is secure and doesn't wobble from side to side. If so, keep tightening it. The bushing and foot of the hinge lie flat on the top of the toilet and do not kink over the mounting hole. Ready! All in all, would I buy it again? Maybe. The decisive factor was the metal design of the hinges that matched the decor. That being said, I considered others with white plastic hinges, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just that this one was more aesthetically pleasing. I will update if I start shaking or something breaks. FYI, we're of average height and weight so let's see how he holds up. UPDATE: 02/13/17 still holds. I've had a lot of people over the course of a few months and only a couple of times have I noticed slight movement so I checked the top handle that secures the seat, it just had to be pushed back in, not even a quarter turn if that's the case is. Otherwise it is in good condition. It's even the theme of some LOL birthday parties - parenthood. When a brilliant idea of having a place 2 in 1 is equated with social events. LAUGH OUT LOUD. Although it's a hit. The chrome trim has no stains yet, not even from splashes and cleaning products. Update 1/2019: Actually, I should have written this a few months ago, but the children didn't give me any free time. I love Baby Benadryl - just kidding. However. The finish holds up considering my 5 year old used it all the time so it's impressive. I did notice though that it may have been a combination of adults using this, the hidden magnet is starting to break through the wood paneling. For example, do you know when you've been inside the house long enough that the nails underneath the drywall (due to the way the house flexes with the seasons) begin to push out the nail and wall material like a bump or even punch through? I have a feeling that the flexing from the different weights causes the area around the magnet in the lid to do the same. It hasn't fallen out or anything, but stress cracks are visible. I'll try to update the photo later. In addition, the seat is still functional and looks good from above. However, it's a good solution if you don't have a plastic singing bowl hanging in the corner somewhere.
