It was handy. I've used two of these. You can do it from the room and avoid the attic, although I climbed the first one and it's a bit easier. But there is a problem! Beware! It says 24 inches down the center and I was a few inches under. At least two. But with such a length, with an extension, it was weak and unreliable. I added two bytes to narrow the spacing to 18, and then heavily (for the ceiling fan). At 20 inches, the mechanism was not even straight: the rod, unscrewing, began to turn sideways. I'm also not sure why "just hand tightened". Why not 1-2 turns with a wrench? But basically the problem is that the measurement (24 inch OC) is misleading.
