Problems with 5GHz. Throw away the installation disk!

I bought this to replace my old Windows 10 desktop wireless adapter and use the capabilities of my Apple AC 5GHz router. Installation was pretty easy - skip the install disk, it gave my computer a blue screen. Downloaded the "latest" driver from TP-Link. After plugging in the adapter and starting it up, it seemed to work fine, but I noticed a lot of slowdown. I reconfigured my Apple router for a separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz signal and moved all my 5GHz AC devices to the new 5GHz network. This adapter is the only device that has problems with a persistent connection to the 5 GHz network. My desktop is in a 1,000-square-foot apartment about 25 feet from my router, and the 5GHz signal periodically fluctuates from average to weak. There is some interference - an uninsulated wall and some metal office furniture - but my mobile devices don't have such an issue in this location and maintain a stable connection even further away from the router. The 2.4GHz network connection is strong and stable, but its clock speed is about 1/3 the speed of the 5GHz network. Basically, I'm not thrilled with this purchase and I'm concerned that I bought a "new" adapter that is actually no longer supported by TP-Link. It's faster than the previous adapter (on a normal connection) and I may need to use the 2.4GHz network for gaming or video chatting if consistency is required. I'm disappointed that the 5GHz connection is so inconsistent after adjusting my router settings and even moving it closer to my desktop. My desktop computer is about 7 years old and this is my third and possibly last Tp-Link adapter.

Pros
  • An absolute legend
Cons
  • Good overall, but...
