This filter is rubbish but listen to me. The only reason I gave this 3 stars and not 1 is because I bought some activated carbon after numerous filter changes, the water in the aquarium turned gray (although really dark gray, sometimes you couldn't see the fish). I took a used filter, removed the lid, poured the charcoal in and filled it with activated charcoal from Aquatech (half a pound cost me $7 and it takes about a teaspoon to fill this thing). The water immediately became crystal clear and stayed that way. Now I have enough filter material for several years. Two replacement cartridges from the company cost almost $5 and contain about 1/2 teaspoon of some really awful stuff that makes the water even dirtier even after soaking and cycling. You get what you pay for BUT you can upgrade with a little ingenuity.
