UPDATE: not really.

I had to shorten the tube that went to the bottom of the filter to about a third of its original length to fit in the aquarium and the plant that came with it is quite thorny so I removed it and used the other one that I had . However, it works surprisingly well. UPDATE: It doesn't look like it's filtering anything out of the water, it's just stirring the crap around. Because the base is below the gravel, no shit gets into the filter there, and every time you change the water, the new waterโ€ฆ

Happy customer, good product for aquarium pumps and filters

Great gravel filter system for my daughter's beta. Used in a 1.5 gallon tank. Many have reported cloudy or gray water. This type of filter must be flushed thoroughly before adding it to the system, otherwise it will. All new items should be flushed before adding to the aquarium. The only issue we had was that the bladder tube that the filter sits on was a bit high for our tank, but it's easy to trim and there you go! Also a note for new fish owners. The gravel still needs to be cleanedโ€ฆ

Exhaust filter

This filter is rubbish but listen to me. The only reason I gave this 3 stars and not 1 is because I bought some activated carbon after numerous filter changes, the water in the aquarium turned gray (although really dark gray, sometimes you couldn't see the fish). I took a used filter, removed the lid, poured the charcoal in and filled it with activated charcoal from Aquatech (half a pound cost me $7 and it takes about a teaspoon to fill this thing). The water immediately became crystal clearโ€ฆ

Great filter with few modifications

A handy little filter that after a few modifications worked wonders on my 1 gallon betta bowl. I had to cut the riser about 40% off because the filter head was above the waterline and didn't work properly when placed in the bowl. I also threw out the inferior material in the filter head and replaced it with the high quality carbon and fiber I already had on hand. I placed a 15 watt flat heater on the bottom, placed a filter on top and placed a small bubbler disc on top of the filter (it onlyโ€ฆ

You can't save money, but you can make it

I've read other reviews. One said it was good for gallon cans. maybe, but the glass I had in mind had a hole that was too small. Don't buy this and think you're saving money. If you don't buy locally, $7 is $3 less than a small aquarium with light and filter at your local pet store. I noticed a few things one person said bend it to fit your glass. I don't recommend it. I tried it and it literally showed signs of cracking, but I think mine was fine after all. Also, I listened to the reviews andโ€ฆ
