An interesting use of the same plastic mesh that the intake air filters are made of. This is the same black plastic screen used in cars to keep bugs and debris out of the inner workings of the air conditioning and heating system. The same material is used to make buffer pads for floor polishers. It's not a sponge. It holds very little water. It would be better to apply soap and water if one side was a real sponge like those dishwashing sponges in the kitchen. However, it really smoothed out my horse's coat and removed loose hair. It seemed to remove a noticeable amount of loose dust and I could see where it was removing slightly stuck dried dirt, particularly on the face and legs. And my horse didn't seem to mind when I used it on the outside of his sheath and between his hind legs. I can't imagine this being very effective on a winter coat or shaggy bangs. The small poke pieces aren't very long, unlike a regular brush or curry, and they don't remove loose skin and dirt from under a thick layer of wool. But as I mentioned before, it's good for the face, legs, vagina and buttocks. I used this desiccant on a horse with a summer coat. When I tried using it wet on the same horse I also needed a regular sponge to apply water and soap to his coat as it holds very little water. It seemed to clean well but doesn't seem to do any better than a regular sponge. So this is interesting. That may come in handy at some point. But a good big kitchen sponge would do the same or even better job and not cost as much. You can get four scourers for the price of one. Your mileage may vary. :)
