Review on High Gain Antenna Tenda U12 AC1300 Dual-Band Wireless Wi-Fi 📶 USB 3.0 Adapter for PC and Mac with White Color Compatibility by Steve Wynn

Revainrating 4 out of 5

A good mini adapter to upgrade your WiFi device, has an extension cord when the USB port is too full, and works with USB 2.0 and 3.0.

A good solution for those who have old laptops and computers without 5GHz support. Upgrading them from 2.4GHz did not help my printer or my ROKU. There has to be something on board that can support the drivers. However, it is good to upgrade many old machines. I have several older computers and they work with both USB 2.0 and 3.0. If there are few or no obstacles on the computer between the router and this adapter, the 5GHz connection will work well. If there are several walls or a large distance, dropouts occur. I have a Dell Mini in the back bedroom 3-4 walls away from the front bedroom where the wifi router is. A USB WiFi adapter used to be used to improve the built in adapter and it improved things a bit but 5GHz had issues. I use the Japanesepod101 website which I subscribe to and it streams voice and video Japanese lessons. It's gotten a little better over the years, but it's not as reliable a streaming site as some, so you'll need a good connection to keep it going with a flimsy adapter. The Tenda U12 AC1300 performed better than the old adapter I was using, but still didn't get past all the walls very well at 5GHz. Because it was faster than the old USB adapter, I was able to get a decent connection at 2.4GHz. I tried some other experiments and they worked fine, but as I occasionally disconnect from them for unknown reasons I don't recommend it unless you have a good PBX network. That means I have several devices that extend the 5GHz network by running it over the power lines in your house and then acting as an extension to the wireless router at the other end. I've had mixed results with my probably related electrical system which is partially two wire in parts of the house. When I moved in, I modernized important areas so as not to damage my equipment. I've tried doing remote communications like X-10 controls for lights, security cameras, outlets, and electrical switches and the results always seem to be mixed. I suspect that the mixed ground system affects signal continuity. I recommend either one with a better 2.4GHz adapter for an older machine, or two using 5GHz in the same room as a wireless router on another machine. Yes, it would be better to just run another ethernet cable for it if it's nearby, but if the rooms are big and you only need negligible rather than ultra-high acceleration, this works well.

Pros
  • Ideal for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Not sure
