I received this product on Sunday evening. Upon opening the box I was greeted with brief instructions which gave me hope that this would be an easy and simple installation. I was completely wrong. So, after 4 hours and 1 factory reset, I turned on the NAS. Like many tech companies, Synology offers the usual feedback and tracking options, which I typically turn down. What I didn't expect was that the NAS would fail when I chose not to participate in the final selection during launch, which ties agreeing to their online crap to accepting their end user license agreement. So I had to reboot the damn NAS, accept their OS, then go back and deselect their tracking junk. Finally, after 4 hours, the NAS was configured. Day 2: After the first night I became more concerned as I started my troubleshooting efforts and started noticing additional performance issues. While reinstalling the NAS OS (after not accepting the OS tracking the first time), I set up a continuous ping test between my Mac and the NAS. Note that there is only one hop, my router. However, average packet ping times varied from 500ms to almost 7 seconds! WTF Synology, my dead mom can move packages faster! Please note that I also tested other nodes on my network which showed normal ping responses (1ms). Also note that the NAS is connected to a 1GB terrestrial Ethernet network (as detailed in the countless articles I've researched). I also connected another host to my router's ethernet port to make sure that wasn't the problem (it wasn't). Anyway, as the second day stretched into the evening, I finally got Time Machine working with two Macbook Pros. . This time the backup will start and then stop. At first I thought it was a Time Machine issue, so I spent the rest of the evening trying to fix it. After exhausting all ideas, I decided to leave things alone since an article I read explained that initial Time Machine backups take longer than many expect. So after a night of troubleshooting I went back to bed and decided to check again in the morning. Day 3 Of course the backups didn't work. Only 1GB was moved overnight. However, there is a new feature; I can no longer log into the NAS! It hits the login screen and that's it! I thought a few power resets should work, but no! This is the Synology NAS we're talking about, and NOTHING can be that easy. I've had NAS in the past, and yes I know they're not fast devices, but that's bullshit. Synology should be ashamed of putting their name on this dung heap. I plan to remove and return this NAS today. I hope my review will persuade others not to waste their time on this product. If you value your time and money, stay away from this product!
