I wore similar mittens while serving in Alaska near the Arctic Circle. I was assigned to AFS Murphy Dome, a radar site maintained by Army radar operators while the Air Force handled everything else. I was the PR officer there. The arctic gear we received at Elmendorf Air Base consisted of an Artic parka jacket, Artic pants, Artic boots, and Artic mittens. But the mittens were a little different. Arctic gauntlets issued by the Air Force were made of thicker dark brown leather. The leather of these gloves is a bit thinner. Mittens from AF featured boar hair on the back of the mittens to wipe the nose. These mittens use felt. Overall, they look and feel just as warm as the original AF mittens. I bought these because of the cold polar vortex weather we've had here in Southwest Lower Michigan. Every time it blew, my hands got cold. I'm pretty sure these mittens will prevent that in the future. I'm happy with them and they were very cheap.
