Requires USB power cable connected to work. I would have preferred a micro-USB plug instead of the round power plug so that I could use a different cable length if necessary. Luckily that wasn't a problem for me. My gaming pc settings (g-sync, 144hz, 1440p) worked great right out of the box! So it was really nice. I had some issues with my work laptop going from USBC to DP and then to the switch. I'm pretty sure the work laptop's signal was at a lower acceptable level, so adding extra wire connections to use the switch caused it to drop so much it wanted to blink. I don't think the switch is to blame, it's just that the extra terminals cause a slight voltage drop. This was fixed by buying a cheap DP signal booster. Even if I had to buy 2 signal boosters it would be cheaper than some of the more expensive DP switch options.
