Review on ๐Ÿšฝ Thetford 40505 SmartTote2 Portable RV Waste Tote Tank - 12 Gallon Capacity with 2 Wheels by Anthony Woolley

Revainrating 3 out of 5

It's an absolutely meager aquarium

Make no mistake - this 12 gallon aquarium is a SmartTote2 jerk in many ways. Not only is it the smallest of the range, it also lacks all the useful features of its larger siblings: no built-in hose and no built-in retractable vent/overflow indicator. (It also comes with an instruction manual which applies to larger models but NOT this tank.) The lack of a full indicator is particularly annoying as extreme care is required to avoid overfilling this small tank. There's no way of knowing how crowded it is unless you stop every few seconds and stick a chopstick or small needle into the vent as a probe. If you don't do it right, dirt will spurt out of that orifice! Since I decided to play it safe and not fill the tank to the end and not make a smelly mess, it took me twice as many trips to the landfill. The only reason I bought this model is because my Airstream trailer has fairly low dump valves and I needed a tank with the inlet lower than the dump valves. Ten inches, this one barely. Since this model doesn't have a built in hose unlike all other SmartTote2 tanks, I had to make my own by cutting off a 5ft sewer hose and attaching a female fitting to what was previously the male end. No, you can't use a regular drain hose - you need a hose with TWO PORTS! To flush this tank through the vent you will also need a garden hose with two female ends. I had to do it too. If you absolutely must have the lowest profile tank due to clearance issues, then this will do. But if you have a choice, go for one of the larger models. Her qualities that will make life much easier.

Pros
  • Best in its niche
Cons
  • Poorly thought out
