I recently used OM 3 and took 4 after seeing that it didn't need balancing (that's the biggest problem with using gimbals) and I'm very happy with it. It's lighter than the 3 Series, the engines are noticeably faster and yes, it takes a bit of getting in and out. Also, it's basically the same price as 3 to 4 (considering it comes with a tripod and is equivalent to a 3 pack). I wouldn't recommend the move from 3 to 4 for most people as it's more of an evolutionary step than a revolutionary change. But if you prefer one over the other, go for 4, it's worth the extra amount, although they've reduced the price by 3 to around $100 at the time of this review.
