Be sure to purchase the extra set screw

Warned by other reviews when I received this antenna I carefully checked the packaging before opening it. Of course, the adjusting screw was missing. In a sealed package, it didn't rattle - it just wasn't there. It was missing when the antenna was packed at the factory. That annoyed me to no end. I live in a rural area so I had to drive a 4,000 pound car 26 miles round trip to buy a 50 cent set screw. Pull yourself together, K40. Without this adjusting screw, the antenna is useless. How about a little quality control? After assembly I found that I had to cut about 3/8 inch off the antenna stalk because it was too long, even at the very bottom. Reminder K40: I had to drill a hole for the antenna rod because it was poorly machined and I couldn't get the rod in more than 1/8 inch. Another quality control issue. Finally I tuned the antenna to about 1.4 SWR on channel 1 and 1.7 on channel 40. Not bad. I'll have to agonize over that when I have some time. The call range has exceeded about 2 miles so far. I was hoping for the best, but maybe a little more optimization would help. The magnet scratches my roof as others have reported. Another quality control issue the K40 needs to fix. There is a sharp spot on the bottom of the magnetic base. So far only 3 problems with QC. However, the magnet holds tight, so I don't expect it to move at high speeds. Note K40: Would it be that difficult to put a corona sphere on the tip of an antenna shaft? The sharp tip will scrape the paint off my garage door if I accidentally forget to remove the antenna first.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
