Ceramic gets hot in the microwave but feels pretty cool to the touch! They have to do a lot to try and break one because they are very strong. Good thickness of the material they are made of. I really like these bowls and now we use them for all our daily meals. As I pack nice ceramic plates to move in, they are perfect! (Also great for camping - look out for cookware made from the same material as well)
