Wouldn't recommend for large dogs. I originally used it as a deterrent. When I finally broke down and used it to stop my dog from licking his paws, he broke the plastic part of the guard almost immediately. After 4 days of continuous wear, the device definitely looks worse with wear and tear. The plastic screen is torn, parts are missing. Their ears feel warmer, which makes them even more itchy. It seemed like a good idea but I don't think it would work for large breeds. Small dogs cannot do as much damage. The convenience of the three rows of Velcro allows for easy removal so my dog can eat and drink and then replace. Ultimately, it does the job it was designed for. Even with holes but I expected it to fit somewhere and couldn't find it. Maybe in a year she'll need it again, only to find I have no idea where she is and buy a new one at the next thorn. Now I know this is going straight into the bin and I may need to buy a replacement first. If you have a small dog it should be fine, but larger dogs will rip the plastic protector. I am writing as the owner of a Rottweiler. It seemed like it would be cost effective if I had a small dog, I don't think I would bother to buy this product. Unfortunately this is not the case and next time I might go to an overpriced vet.
