I just bought a Denon AVRX4700H and am using it in the 5.4.2 configuration. I have it in a closed closet. I even installed fans on the back of the case to improve airflow. This also makes the Denon very hot. With modern AVRs, manufacturers no longer install "switchable" AC outlets on the back panel to allow fans or other peripherals to turn on when your system is powered on. I bought an S8 with a thermal switch that turns on the fans. This particular model vents the air to the back of the case. I set it to "auto" and chose a medium fan speed. 5 minutes after Mulan, the device turned on and fell silent with the closet doors closed. It's amazing how cool it has allowed Denon to play almost at the "reference" level. With the doors open, I couldn't hear the fans running from 11 feet at the selected medium speed. With the doors closed, high settings were still very difficult to hear. An interesting feature is the "Smart Mode", which turns on the fans when heat is detected and changes the fan speed depending on temperature fluctuations. The build quality is fantastic and the larger 3 fan version is perfect for a standard sized AVR. Other reviewers removed the legs and installed rubber grommets along the base to improve efficiency. I don't think this is necessary and could potentially damage the temp sensor. Exceeded all expectations! Highly recommended!
