I "collect" yarn from used sweaters. I used to make skeins with a central pull on my thumb, but when I saw this inexpensive yarn winder I decided it was worth buying to speed up the process. The thread guide falls out a lot, but works well overall. Although I have scissors, when unpicking a sweater it makes sense to go straight from the sweater part to the yarn winder and just control the tension by hand so the yarn doesn't stretch. The hand crank works easily and smoothly. I see no reason to use high end winders (except at yarn shops when they need to wind balls much faster) and I highly recommend this one.
