Review on High-Performance Taramps Smart 3 Mono Amplifier - 3000 Watts, 1~2 Ohms, Class D by Angelo Forrest

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Amazing value for a 3kW amp!

I recently bought one of these to try out and see what the deal is. This amp promises 3000 watts into 1-2 ohms. Constant power is nothing new, JL Audio have been making amplifiers using this technology since the early 2000s and Rockford Fosgate also builds BDCP series constant power amplifiers into multiple ohm loads. Big price difference. The JL and RF models are expensive and out of reach for many car audio users. This Taramps Smart 3 cost well under $300 at the time of review, and the cost was pretty amazing. I put the amp on my dyno and ran it for almost an hour with multiple loads on the SMD amp dyno and easily confirmed that the 3000w power rating is indeed in the range of 1, 1.3, 1.6 and 2 ohms is valid. I also ran later tests down to 1/2 ohm and the amp continued to perform at a level that very few amps can handle. I've tested over 250 amps over the past 10 years and only a handful of them have been able to handle a 1/2 ohm load. An amazing performance for a budget amp! However, there is no free lunch. To get full performance you need to power the amp from a strong electrical system. For best results you will need at least one additional battery and an alternator rated at least 150 amps. You will also need 1/0 OFC wiring. Remember, it takes power to generate power! All in all, this is a pretty impressive amp. It worked well with my 6000 watt Massive Audio BOA121 subwoofer (0.5 ohm impedance) and made it look like it would jump right out of the box. The sound quality was good, I didn't notice the weak bass I've previously experienced with the HD series taramps. This amp, too, couldn't help but impress me. I'm amazed at the value you get. Great job Taramps.
