*No* single cable solution for MacBook

I bought this monitor for several reasons. The main reason was the "single cable solution" advertised, which presumably lets you plug a USB-C cable straight into your MacBook and connect all your peripherals to the multiple ports offered by the monitor. The problem is that when the MacBook is idle or going to sleep, the monitor turns off all peripherals, especially external USB drives. Then, while the MBP is idle, the monitor keeps plugging and unplugging the drive (see attached photo). This means that every time you step away from the computer you are returned to tens or hundreds of disconnection messages (which I have to delete with one click, others may know a shortcut to make them disappear immediately). In order for this monitor to work, I have to plug the USB directly into my MacBook, which defeats the main purpose of buying the monitor in the first place. Dell support seems surprised by this and blames 1) the MacBook, 2) the external drive, 3) anything else they can think of, not to say the product has a design flaw. Note. A drive attached directly to a MacBook does not reproduce this behavior when the computer goes to sleep. The variable is the monitor. The picture quality is stable. The tilt/swivel/lift functions are also good.

Pros
  • Its advanced display technology produces a sharp and clear image.
Cons
  • Limited Connectivity.
