Spikes on clamps

This vise is of excellent quality. This is designed for light loads, moderate would probably be a more appropriate rating. It should be noted that he has no tubular jaws. So if a round shank clamp is required, this vise is not for you. But for work in moderate conditions this vise is fine: the jaws are clamped in parallel, there is a good size anvil for shaping, the jaws have flat, horizontally machined surfaces - not the more usual diamond pattern, the base rotates 360 degrees. Degree with two clamping screws, when attaching the vice to the workbench, the fixed jaw can protrude slightly over the edge of the workbench - a necessary design feature for vertically clamping long workpieces, the lead clamping screw supplied prevents dirt - e.g. from files, the movable jaw and the lead screw move smoothly with minimal gap, the vise assembly rotates freely on the base, but there is a noticeable gap between them - it would be nice if Jost machined the surfaces that control rotation - not a functional issue, but it spoils the feel of high quality , after all, the vise looks beautiful. You will be comfortable with the aesthetic. If you are looking for a light to medium duty vise look no further; If you need something sturdier, check out the Yost FSV-4 or 6. I will be using the Yost RIA-4 for housework on a small workbench in the garage. I'm considering replacing my shop vise with one of the FSV models. The RIA-4 was well packaged in a tight-fitting, heavy-duty box that was inside a second triple-gauge box. The vise arrived undamaged and the boxes had straps wrapped around them for easy lifting. The vise is made in Taiwan but don't let that put you off, the quality is very good. Yost also has USA made vises for very heavy duty, but they are quite expensive. RIA-4 isn't cheap, but I like it. I highly recommend the Yost.RIA-4 for light to medium duty applications that do not require clamping of round work pieces.
