This is a great alternative to the 400+ 9x12 floor carpet. Yes, it's a matte plastic material, but you don't have to worry about spilling anything on it, it wipes away instantly. You should be really careful when moving your furniture over it to avoid snagging and tearing it, but other than that it's very solid. This is exactly what I had in mind when I envisioned my open plan space and it is double sided so you can create two different looks with the same rug/mat. I just didn't have the money to buy a $400 rug that size. This is the second one I've bought, the first lasted 3 years and I could still use it on the other side but I wanted a different color. If you leave it in straight elements all the time, it won't last as long as under a canopy or roof. I am very happy with this blanket/mat.
