I bought a pair of these sponge filters for my bettas over a week ago. Upon arrival I noticed a gummy smell when opening both packages but figured that after a thorough rinse everything should be fine. Today I noticed that my betta fish is much less active than usual and stays in the top corner of the tank all morning and the rest of the day. I opened the lid all the way and smelled a strong rubber smell. Also, I put her in a quarantine aquarium with fresh clean water and noticed that her white head became more transparent and red gills were visible from her small head. As if she had been poisoned. Everything in her tank smelled like rubber, water, plants, gravel, I mean everything. I will remove both filters as they cannot be used without rubber suction cups and replace them with something better and odor free.
