in June 2008 and it has served me very well. I filled 85 DVDs with SLP recordings. Without warning, it refused to play or burn my blank DVD. It lasted 18 months and I have a 2 year replacement guarantee. If there are no issues with the warranty company, I'll buy an extended warranty on all electronics, regardless of brand. There is simply no end to the unreliability of affordable electronics. Obviously, the extended warranties are now worth it. ******* Late August 2011, as I suspected, I need to see if my 3 year warranty is worth anything with the mighty SQUARE TRADE WARRANTY. I can no longer use this device because the DVD tray reopens every time I close it. Yes, this DVD model and brand needs to be replaced every few months, but who says EVERY brand and model isn't as short-lived as these. As long as the warranty continues to pay off I will continue to use this Samsung because I don't want to learn a whole new format from a competing manufacturer only to find out that it doesn't last any longer than the Samsung.
