I adopted a dog from the shelter 2 years ago. She came in with epilepsy and an exacerbation of hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Just a nightmare. She would respond to almost any food I gave her, eating shoelaces, hair ties, chair straps, and blankets to relieve severe stomach pains. A nice lady at the dog park I was visiting suggested a diet consisting only of chicken, lentils, and carrots. This made things much better, but my dog was lethargic and still had bouts of pain and bloody stools. My local store sells Purina wet and meat dog food for 99 cents. I started feeding it to my dog and after about a week I noticed a significant improvement in her health, bowel movements and energy levels. I don't think she was getting enough nutrients to support herself on the homemade diet I gave her. Purina has been in the pet nutrition business for decades. Now I just feed them different flavors of moist and meat.
