Noise! - Computers and accessories

When I unpacked the hard drive I was surprised by the quality of the case and would have given it five stars for build quality. However, as one user noted, the noise level of this drive is unacceptable. As soon as I turned on my ESXi server, I heard a new drive beep, but my WD Reds were silent. I thought it must be the boot function because as soon as the host powers on, the hard drive goes silent. However, once I set the drive to format, the noise coming from that drive became unacceptable. I'm used to the deep hum of WD Red and the barely audible sound of heads moving bits. However, this disc was clearly audible from the next room. I hope I just got a bad ride, but still I gave Segate another chance after they burned it ten years ago and I guess they haven't changed much. Needless to say I have returned this drive and will be getting another WD Red although this drive is cheaper and more comparable to the RED Pro. It's a shame to be honest, because the external case on this drive was much better built than the WD drives, the price per gigabyte was better, and the estimated MTBF was better too. It was easily the best ride on paper, but then the noise started.

Pros
  • Ideal for a small home
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
