Great processor! Make sure your mobo and bios are up to date!

The irony is I just wanted to replace my game controller but then I fell down the rabbit hole and next thing I know I've spent an obscene amount of money doing it and a major update to my old familiar setup. In any case, the plan was to max my current build so I can live the next few generations until the prices get corrected. The motherboard I chose for my budget build had plenty of room to upgrade, and I decided to make the most of it, so I had no choice but to build a new PC from scratch the next time I upgrade. This processor was originally not smooth. Until recently I suffered from random reboots with no explanation or error messages (no BSODs either). After a lot of testing and reinstalling/replacing the hardware, it turned out that the motherboard was defective. Ever since it was replaced by the Aorus Wifi Pro this baby has been singing and able to perform better than the previous mobo without any bios changes. The i5-9400f was a pretty powerful processor, so I wasn't sure what improvements to expect in games. It mainly depends on the GPU. But when I turned on my current game (Yakuza 0), the frame rate was much smoother than the previous one. It's almost distracting to see how smoothly the edges of the screen move as you walk around locations. Considering this CPU overclocks slightly and the new mobo has decent headroom for that, I'm currently set up for gaming until 8k becomes the standard. All in all, adding a good cooler to this thing made me think of a candy bar, but I figured I'd be looking for the best possible air cooler, and the Noctua NH-U12A turned out to be great for my needs.

Pros
  • Compatible with Intel 300 series chipset motherboards
Cons
  • I have doubts
