Dangerous design works best with graters, peelers and slicers

I bought this Microplane because my Oxo Goodgrips, which I've been using for about eight years, had a cracked grip. I cook a lot and use a microplane quite a bit so I figured this design would be more durable. When I first used it for nutmeg and orange peel, I noticed that the blades were angled away from the body of the tool at a steeper angle. This makes it harder to push food through, but can increase grinding speed. Unfortunately, another problem with this design is that since the blades are curved, the food tends to slide sideways. Today I was grating some cheese for a homemade alfredo, the cheese was falling off the rim leaving a nasty cut on my thumb. I don't think I'll need stitches, but I'll wear a bandage for at least a week. And invest in either protective gloves or another tried and tested Oxo microplane, even if it only lasts a few years.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are other interesting options.
