Review on ๐ŸŒค๏ธ AcuRite Iris (5-in-1) Wireless Weather Station: Monitor Indoor/Outdoor Climate with Digital Display (01512M) by Robert Pearson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good station but beware buyers

Like it BUT BUYERS BEWARE. The AcuRite Pro Color Weather Station is a simple yet full-featured home weather station that tells you everything you need to know about local weather. It's also fairly accurate, but there are a few issues directly related to the design itself that can cause problems. In this version, all components, temperature/humidity sensor, anemometer and rain gauge are combined in one unit. This makes it very easy to install and configure. The problem is that in order to get an accurate wind speed and direction, it has to be mounted high - placed in the sun. Direct sunlight heats the temperature sensor, which can cause readings to be 10-15 degrees higher than normal. The solution is to have a small solar powered fan blow outside air around the sensor. The system also works fairly well, but there seem to be issues with the fan motors. Mine came with a broken fan. A forum check on the AcuRite website shows that these fans sometimes run for a few months (or less, right out of the box) and then fail. Faced with a brand new station that wasn't working I could either return it to Revain. or contact AcuRite for replacement or repair. From what I've read on the forums, it seemed like their support team was aware of the issue with the fans and was willing to replace them. I decided to give them a chance. I emailed Chaney Instruments customer support and received an automated response that someone would respond within 3 business days. Two days later I received several troubleshooting steps which I completed and responded to the same day. It took another two days for Cheney Instruments to respond and ask me to send proof of purchase and details. I replied the same day and am still waiting for her response. They always seem to take at least 2 business days to reply to anything. After another 5 days I finally got a response that they would replace my solar panel and motor with an upgraded unit but it could take 4-6 weeks due to being back ordered. So bottom line: I like the stations, and I would really like it if they provided accurate temperature readings. Without a running fan, this will not happen. If you buy this station, be prepared to end up having to replace the fan - possibly as soon as you open the box. If you decide to contact customer service, be prepared to take a couple of weeks to get something done. I would suggest returning it to Revane if it arrives broken. You don't need the aggravation I'm experiencing. Better yet, consider buying at stations that share an anemometer and temperature sensors. Installation may take a little longer, but you have the option of placing the temperature sensor in a shady, sheltered location from direct sunlight. heard nothing more from them. Second update: Nothing has been heard for over a week. I am downgrading my rating to one star as if you buy a broken one or if it fails after a few weeks the company's customer service is not responsive at all. The last update I will make. The company fixed my station by sending me a new fan/solar panel which is still working as of May 2017. My rain sensor has been stuck for 6 months and no longer registers any rain. Maybe because I live in Southern California and we don't get much rain the buckets are just dirty but I've tried cleaning them but nothing has changed. On hot days, the temperature is about 2 degrees warmer than it should be, but the fan is still running, so at least continues to run normally.
