We had a huge and beautiful ceramic pot for many years, but it had such a tiny drainage hole that we were afraid if we planted anything in it it would die because the water wouldn't drain properly. I actually did some research, but honestly I was horrified when I tried to poke a few holes and smash the whole pot. Long story short, my husband held the hose and poured water into the bottom of the pot while I drilled. The drill twitched and bounced a few times and I was worried it wouldn't work, but I persevered by pushing a little harder and pushing down. Suddenly the drill bores into the ceramic. I pressed hard and within seconds the drill bit broke through, leaving a perfect, glassy hole. I repeated the process and called it good enough. Relax!
