This shelf worked as advertised. I was able to put a kayak in the center of the roof and then put two bikes, one on each side of the kayak, on the same rack system (58 inches). Without rollers, you need two people to put on and take off the kayak. It is also very important to use a towel or mat in the car as it takes two tall people to put the kayak on the rack without touching the car. I wore it with my daughter and the towel saved the car from certain scratches that would have happened without the towel. I used the two attachment straps that came with the kit and then tied another strap to the front of the kayak and tied it to the front of the van for extra stability. We didn't have to tie our backs. It was very safe.
