Now that I've figured out how it works, it works fine. There weren't really any instructions on how to do it (maybe my product didn't have any?). I found instructions from another brand for a similar product. Basically turn off your tower, unplug it, wait 10 seconds, install the USB-C connector (make sure it is oriented correctly) and plug the adapter into the USB 3.0 port. If I did otherwise, I was either not recognized or there were too many power warnings from USB.
