I've been through a lot of "instant" read thermometers. This is the first one I've found, really instantly (less than 1 second). I've found myself using it a lot more because it reads so quickly. It is calibrated when you receive it, but you can calibrate it yourself if you need it for some reason. Useful to flip left/right hand text. My only complaint, as others have mentioned, is the very weak magnet. It's barely enough to support the weight of the thermometer, but not enough to hold it in the position you put it in. I don't use a magnet anyway, so I don't really care.
