I've followed the directions and while the desired result is likely to be achievable with a little practice, it's just not practical. The roller is covered in a smooth, silky material and my hair is quite straight so it wanted to slide over the roller instead of staying in place. The roller on my head was uncomfortable and you had to wear it for a while to let your wet hair dry around it to keep the shape. I suppose you could sleep with it, but it would be uncomfortable for side sleepers. For people trying to avoid damage from heat styling, this might be a solution, but I'm sticking with my flat curls.
