Review on Pentax 03 Fish Eye Lens by Djkutt Kent

More fun than I ever imagined!

I've never been a big fisheye fan because the lenses seemed so expensive for something that is rarely used compared to a regular focal length lens. But as a Q owner, this one was incredibly cute and inexpensive. I'm glad I took the plunge - this lens is very common on my Q! Technically, it's not as sharp as a Prime, and obviously lacks some features like autofocus, a built-in shutter, aperture, and the Zoom and Prime ND filters. However, some of these problems are mitigated by the tremendous depth of field of the 3.2mm f/5.6 lens. It's not set and forgotten, as Pentax has given you far more focus than you need, ostensibly to achieve a severely blurred "toy" image if you want. But focusing manually is really easy, and once you get the hang of it, you can focus without even looking at the screen. Color and contrast are very good - maybe even better than Zoom to be honest. Sharpness doesn't quite match the tiny, high-resolution Q-sensor, but it's good enough for a fairly large print in good light. In low light, the Q's excellent image stabilization (which works with the fisheye attached) actually helps a bit; I was able to get sharp images fairly regularly with shutter speeds up to 1/2 second. As such, the f5.6 aperture isn't top-notch, and you can expect to be able to use this lens indoors as long as you're stable and have some light. In fact, this lens is made for fun and new perspectives. I really enjoyed shooting environmental portraits with it - get close to your subject and shoot at an ultra wide angle and you'll get plenty of context and some touching images. Architecture is another interesting place to use fisheye, as is any nature shot (where the curved verticals are almost invisible). Try new things and you will definitely love this addition to your Q-Set. I think this is a must have for any Q owner.

Pros
  • Worth the money
Cons
  • Very expensive

It's fun, and I'm keeping it.. Sharp it is not. Price per performance ratio? good enough.
