Time to Drop the Rock Drill

During the construction of the deck we were commissioned to drill 5" deep holes in hardened concrete to mount the 2-by to a concrete wall with large threaded screws We started with a heavy one Makita impact drill to drill a hole through a 2-bay wood drill bit and then switched to an impact drill. A minute of running the drill at high speed resulted in a hole deep enough for a 5 inch Tapcon screw. I ordered a Bosch SDS rotary hammer over the weekend. The second step, attaching the board to the wall, was much easier. No pre-drilling was required to drill the panel. Instead, just put a bit of concrete on the board and let it break. With very little pumping (or vibration) it almost melted into the concrete. Drilling the hole took maybe 10 seconds or less. I can't say anything about the durability but it seems that for the price it is very affordable compared to the flag carrier (Hilti).

Pros
  • Professional rock drill design - 2.4 ft-lb power. Impact energy, vibration control and three modes of operation
Cons
  • So far so good
