Review on Optimized for SEO: Sony ICD-SX25 Digital Voice Recorder by Brent Cole

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Slightly larger and slightly smaller than the old ICD-ST25

06/04/05 - Addendum This model (SX25) does not have an LCD backlight so you cannot see the display in the dark or in dim light (the ST25 had a good green). The noise is much higher on this model. So if you're not very stable, use an external microphone so the noise doesn't overwhelm your recording (don't try to record out of your pocket or in a velvet carrying case). Sensitivity has been increased for shots at 1-4ft, so there's a trade-off here. However, the internal condenser (stereo) microphones are not isolated from the unit's body, so any contact with the body will generate noise.-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- = Anything, what you liked (or disliked) about the ST25 returned in the new model, but this one is 1/4 inch thinner and the display is wider but shorter - the same displays. The new STLP mode is like an ST (High Quality Mode) file, but at a lower resolution, allowing you to pack a third more time into 32MB of non-expandable memory (still around 7 hours on SP, 15 hours on LP , 2.5 hours on ST). , say 4 hours on STLP). Do not attempt to digitally record music on this unit as you cannot turn off the auto gain function (it is actually intended for recording speeches or other presentation material, not concert recording). As a last resort, I've used it to capture the DVD's line-out audio, but it doesn't work well with large volume changes as it attempts to balance everything to an overall acceptable volume level. I like/dislike the Idea <-v^->FF 4-way RW switch - gets rid of an extra double-sided button, but it's confusing if you try to manipulate it without looking at the display. However, if the settings are to my liking, I usually don't need to touch that button. You simply press "Record” to start recording and again to stop recording ("Stop” saves and lets the recording create a separate file). It's good at splitting and merging, and the USB port allows proprietary software to manipulate sound files for general control (but with very limited editing). Battery life is the same as the ST25 - around 16 hours. for a set of 2 AAA. I miss the pivoting mic mount because I've often used the ST25 while sitting on the floor with the mics pointing up or in a shirt pocket away from me. The bottom line is better sound quality than a variety of recorders for $99 or less. Memory card extension is not available, so you need to reset your files to free up space. The speaker is loud enough that you can hold it to your ear and hear playback clearly in a noisy airport, so that's a nice touch. As a last resort, you can use it to record music via the line-in, but the quality degrades compared to a real MP3 recorder. Less than most devices of similar performance. Since it was designed to work best when connected to a PC, why not make it USB rechargeable too?
