Review on CMT 835 503 11 Rabbet Carrying Carbide Tipped by David Stewart

High value, high reward

After struggling to make accurate grooves on plywood I went in search of a set of smaller bits (as most people know, 1 /4 "The layer isn't really 1/4", and the 3/4" isn't really 3/4"), and I'm too impatient to play around with a journal gauge. I couldn't find anything other than this set and Aman's set, both around the same price. I decided to buy this one as it came with a full set of smaller dowel bits as well as every possible size I could want. The price is steep - about half the price of my router! But the cuts are very nice. I practiced on scrap wood and then carved real ones and they really are the perfect size. I'll never have to worry about the groove again. I agree with the previous review that the bat itself is huge. You'll need a full-size router to run it, and make sure it's running at a lower speed. The router itself is one of the most dangerous tools in the business, and with this thing, it's downright deadly. Make sure everything is secure before turning it on. Also make sure that the drill bit can rotate in the base of the router bit without touching the walls of the hole. When I put this in place, I noticed that my base plate was pushed back a bit and the bit hit it when I rotated the bit with my fingers (without a router of course), so I had to adjust the base to fit it a bit. The other downside is that the bit doesn't fit in the vacuum nozzle, so I'm back to sweeping the rest of the router back up. The hex wrench and bearings that loosen and secure the jigs are tiny. I can imagine them getting lost. Fear not - there is a part number on the bag in case you lose it. And I'm pretty sure I will. Four stars because I don't really know why the beat is so big. Therefore, great attention must be paid to safe and correct operation (mounting the base plate, low speed, vacuum hose cannot be used). But if you have a fairly large router and are careful you will find a really good set of slotted bits that will last a very long time with great accuracy. I am satisfied with the purchase, I recommend the set.

Pros
  • Heavy duty steel body and anti-kickback construction
Cons
  • Big and bulky
