You have to burn it in before you can turn it on for the first time, and it will stink terribly. Black bread requires two rounds of frying, while a single round is sufficient for white bread. There are three buttons on the case: "stop frying," "heat" (to a preset temperature for 30 seconds), and "defrost," however the latter's utility is unclear given that frozen bread must be thawed by hand. In general, a good model of the toaster heats up and cooks food rapidly.
