Tank vs Tankless

We have a small Bosch water heater so we thought it might make a good addition to the kitchen sink. Unfortunately, this didn't work as expected for our needs. There are a few things to consider when considering this unit. Tank versus without tank. This is a small tank unit. This is NOT a tankless unit. There are big differences in usage patterns. For example, a tankless installation generally requires running water that is heated as it flows through the installation. There is no reservoir, no storage, and therefore it is "infinite". As long as the water is flowing through the device, it will continue to come out hot. This is a small tank that works just like your big tank. It stores a few gallons of water in a small glass-lined tank, which is then heated to the temperature set on a thermometer. Hot water WILL be consumed once the tank is empty. The desired application is saving energy or water. The tankless device saves energy because you only heat the water when you need it. On the other hand, a small reservoir saves water by providing instant access to hot water rather than running the water for several minutes until hot. If you need a constant supply of hot water when you need it, buy a tankless unit. Buy a small tank if you want to reduce the total amount of water you use. It preheats the water so that hot water flows as soon as the faucet is turned on. No need to wait for hot water to flow throughout the house. Installation. It is MUCH easier to install than even the smallest tankless units. It works with a standard electrical plug that plugs in anywhere and two standard hoses that can be used on almost any sink (kitchen or bathroom). A tankless unit typically requires hard wiring and installation modifications. Now a word of caution. For those using newer sinks/faucets, an adapter may be required for the fittings. Ours was made for testing purposes. Perfomance. In testing it worked well enough to get warm. Too hot to touch for the first gallon or two, then quickly turned cold as the water temp dropped. When installed in a line through the hot water, the water was hot almost instantly instead of the 1-2 minutes or so it normally takes to get into this bathroom. it was hot enough to be uncomfortable and then gave way to running hot water from regular hot water. Water heater that stayed at full temperature. Basically, there is no delay or waiting time, which is good. Bottom line - this reduces or eliminates the lag time waiting for water to be heated/transferred to a remote faucet, but does NOT provide a continuous/endless supply of water like a tankless installation. Good option for preheating water on remote taps and saving/reducing water consumption.
